Gift Nifty climbed, Asian markets inched down

Local stock markets are expected to begin in the green today. The Gift Nifty April 2026 futures are trading 0.41 points higher, suggesting a positive start for the benchmark index today. The domestic equity market edged higher in last session, with BSE Sensex and Nifty 50 marginally higher.The BSE Sensex has drifted lower 4.36% over the last one month, while the NSE Nifty has eased 4.41% over the same period.

In Asia today, sentiment was subdued. China’s SSE Composite Index eased 0.34% while Japan’s Nikkei 225 moved higher 0.07%. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index posted modest losses of 1.08%.

Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) sold shares worth Rs 2,032 crore, while domestic institutional investors (DIIs) were net buyers to the tune of Rs 3,908 crore in the Indian equity market on 16 September 2026, provisional data showed.

Overnight on Wall Street, stocks slipped across the board. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down by 631.21 points, or 1.21%, and closed at 51482.90. The S&P 500 edged lower 0.43% to end at 7574.33, and the NASDAQ Composite inched higher 0.02% to 26006.53.

Yesterday, the S&P BSE Sensex edged up 332.63 points or 0.45% to 74336.45. The Nifty 50 index posted modest gains of 99 points or 0.43% to 23217.60. HDFC Life Insurance Company Ltd was top gainer in Nifty 50 yesterday, edging up 2.73% to Rs 530.20. The stock has posted modest gains of around 1.43% in last one-week and remains down 10.47% over last one-month.

In sectoral indices, only Nifty FMCG index moved higher yesterday, gaining 1.63% on the day.
